KRUA = Suck A$$ Club

December 6, 2011

Oh em gee, Mish-Fish, we are back and… WTF? There are approximately 7 jillion new restaurants blowing up the ‘hood, people with bad clothes are happier than ever, and you still can’t wear red past Cesar Chavez.

Robby and I decided to dive into some Mission mayhem this weekend, so we went to check out the new nightclub, KRUA (just a stroll away at 16th and Guerrero.) Apparently this used to be some lame-ass Thai resto, but we heard that the owners got hip to the needs of the neighbs.  They are def gunning to be the next A1A Steak Lounge.  Natch.

Xanax does NOT REQUIRE SILVERWARE, PPL. ( I can't sit down in this dress ne way.)

Geared up for some srs J-Pop, I decked out in my best six inch sling-backs + tiny tube shirt-dress, picked up Mr. Aberdeen (crucial accessory) and started getting crazy sloppy on those whiskey-filled chocolate balls. (It’s XMAS BIA!) When we got to KRUA, though, I was all “Where’s the line?” For reals, people, there were approximately negative five humans in the place. Maybe has something to do with the fact that they are totes crowding the dance floor w/ weird-ass tables. (Or weird ass-tables?)  Oh and NO LIQUOR? WTF? How am I supposed to get crunk and make out with hella strangerz?

Verdict: KRUA Thai is NOT where the party is at.  Unless you are into free ice water and cracking your shins on aluminum chairs while you get your freak on.

Mission Street Food: It’s for Real!

March 9, 2010

A few days ago I overheard someone talking about “Mission Street Food” and how amazing it was.  This weekend I got a chance to try it for myself.  I thought it might be some sort of outdoor restaurant or something, but no… It’s much more than that.  It’s a grassroots movement of residents participating in what is essentially a week-long tailgate party!  And it’s every week of the year!

The best part of the Mission Street Food Movement is that everyone’s invited to participate.  Here’s how: Drive your minivan along Mission Street until you find a spot, whip out the home grill, and BOOM!  Mission Street Food!  It’s just that easy.  Everyone I saw that night seemed to be cooking up the same thing: a baconator hot dog.  They just wrap a dog in bacon, grill it up with some onions and spicy peppers and serve to the masses.  Actually, the baconator is so prevalent, it has come to be the Mish’s only late night outdoor dining option.

I can’t wait until I buy a minivan so I can participate in the movement!  It’s going to be redic.  Baconators for all!

Gestalt Haus: Wicked Cool

February 22, 2010

Snap that tap! (get 'em!)

This place is great, and I’m so glad I found it.  It’s a few doors down from our fave movie destination, The Roxie.  Just look for the pool table and the be-geared “Gestalt” logo.  When you get there, plunk yourself down on a bar stool and order a beefy (OR VEGAN!)  sausage and a fancy beer.  If you are riding your bike, no problem!  There are some bike-hooks on the wall that are rarely used, so hang-er-up and enjoy!

The bartenders are not to be trifled with, so be sure to tip.  I saw a beefy bartender rip the metal handle right off the Napa Smith Pale Ale tap, spraying delicious beer everywhere.  The Napa is RIP until they either get a welder or a decent bike mechanic to fix that tap.  So if you’re in the mood for a pale, try the Sierra Nevada… mmmm.

One awesome perk of Gestalt: above the bar TVs.  Not a fan of Olympic hockey?  No problem!  Just avoid tilting your head upwards!  When the game is over, the TVs are turned off.

It's the orange that makes it

The art on the wall is pretty sweet, and affordable, too!  After a couple liters of Leffe, I was almost ready to fork over  the shillings for one of those beautiful fabric silhouette pieces.

The single unisex bathroom boasts some really fantastic design.  You can tell a lot of thought and effort was put into giving this a “dirty south dive bar” kind of feel.  And the whole “Bring Your Own TP” thing is a nice touch, too.  Well done!

Real "Dirty South"

Free Tunes at Adobe Books

February 19, 2010

Last night, a mysterious and bespectacled dude handed us this legit ad and encouraged attendance:

BART card included for scale.

Three artists play the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery for zero loot?! Seems too magical to be for realz.   I’ve been e-stalking the crap out of these musicians, and I have got to say, their tunes are solid.

Slap this noise on your calendar!  February 25th at 7 PM will find you in the company of great used books, underground art, and cute people with inspirational haircuts. A night full of win, for sure!

Also:  Casey Chisholm, I would like to take you for burritos.  You seem neat.

Peace out, Indiefest! You were great!

February 19, 2010

For the last two weeks, Robby and I have been camped out inside The Roxie for SF’s IndieFest, and I am mega-sad that this festival has come to an end.

First of all, The Roxie is adorbs.  Nestled between some of 16th Streets most beautiful sights (remind me to tell you about the tranny that offered to sell me her panties), it is a bastion of urban entertainment and really, truly always features a great line-up of flicks.

Buy your tix under the marquis, and a kindly [hip]  ticket taker will guide you to one of the Roxie’s two viewing areas.  Also, as luck would have it, your ticket stub will get you $1 off your next drink at Dalva, a raucous little speakeasy that spoons The Roxie!  (Now that’s what I call rad!) Film specifics…. after the jump!

O IndieFest, you rule like there is no tomorrow!

For closing night, we checked out “Limbo Lounge,” and … whoa.  It was effing great, ya’ll.  The acting was phenom, the plot was entertaining and thought provoking (without being all, “OMG WE ARE SO MUCH SMARTER THAN YOU WILL EVER BE!”), and the cinematography was top-notch.   Most IndieFest flicks get played twice over the course of the festival, but this one was voted as an audience favorite so it earned one of the super-coveted closing night slots!  Check out their website (linked above) for upcoming festival appearances.

Don’t be dismayed if you missed the fest!  Upcoming films at the Roxie include:  “Precious” (in case you missed this massively hyped Best Picture nominee) and “The Cove” (a documentary that sounds excellently impressive.)  I will be there, and I will share my buttery popcorn.

Love,

Alice A.
